HSV VZV Multiplex Molecular Testing as an Aide in Lesion Differential Diagnosis
A broad range of etiologies may lead to cutaneous, oral or genital lesions, with 3 members of the Herpesviridae family of DNA viruses identified as the most common causes, specifically herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 and varicella zoster virus. While primary antiviral therapeutic choices for HSV and VZV are often the same, appropriate patient management differs based on the causative virus including treatment regimen and duration, transmissibility, long-term complications and recurrence rates and prevention. Therefore, it is imperative that suspected viral lesions be diagnosed accurately, with visual differentiation alone often not possible. This webinar will address the prevalence of herpes virus-related lesions, the importance of viral differentiation and related diagnostic challenges, and provide information on utilizing rapid near-patient molecular multiplex testing to improve lesion diagnosis.
