Disaster Preparedness Planning

Why every business should have a disaster preparedness plan and how to create one

Disasters often come with little or no warning. Whether they are natural or man-made, disasters can be frightening, catastrophic, and heartbreaking events. Don't be unprepared in protecting your frail residents, patients and staff. How quickly your company can get back to business depends on the emergency planning done today. 

A commitment to advanced planning will help employees, customers and the community. Experts agree that planning and preparedness can make a significant difference in the comfort and safety of your community's residents during an emergency. The bottom line is no region or location is immune to the possibility of an emergency or disaster so it is important to be prepared.

Are you planning to stay or planning to go? You should also plan for what you will do if your community is not accessible to emergency responders, vendors and employees. Federal regulations require that Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes have written emergency plans and provide employees with emergency preparedness training. CMS published an emergency preparedness checklist that healthcare communities including nursing homes can use as a guidance to develop and update plans.
