The road to rapid recovery: How Pediatric People uses BIOFIRE® SPOTFIRE® to transform respiratory care

12 min read

SPOTFIRE provides comprehensive molecular results in about 15 minutes — a game-changer compared to traditional send-out panels that can take days.

Pediatric People is a dedicated pediatric and urgent care practice located in Frisco, TX. Serving children and families throughout the surrounding community, the practice provides comprehensive care that blends clinical expertise with a compassionate, family-centered approach. Their mission is to deliver accurate, timely and empathetic care supported by advanced diagnostic tools that help providers make confident decisions at the point of care.

The limitations of traditional diagnostic methods became clear when Phil Powers, a McKesson Medical-Surgical Account Executive, found himself on the other side of a clinical challenge. His 4-year-old son, Liam, developed severe and persistent respiratory symptoms, prompting two separate visits to the pediatrician. Despite worsening symptoms, the diagnostic approach remained the same: a visual and physical exam focused on the throat, ears, heart, vitals and general respiratory presentation. Based on these observations, Liam was diagnosed with a simple cold and sent home with over-the-counter recommendations.

However, the lack of molecular testing during those visits meant a deeper underlying condition went undetected. Over the next 48 hours, Liam’s condition deteriorated significantly. He began showing visible signs of respiratory distress, including difficulty breathing and facial discoloration — indicators that warranted immediate intervention.

For parents, this is a terrifying situation. For providers, it underscores a clear gap: without in-house molecular diagnostics, even experienced clinicians may miss early signs of more serious infections. In Liam’s case, the absence of timely, accurate results delayed treatment and brought his family close to an emergency-level event.

This scenario also reflects a broader challenge many pediatric practices face. Respiratory illnesses often present with overlapping symptoms, making clinical diagnosis based only on an exam difficult. However, send-out testing to reference labs can take days, delaying treatment and increasing stress for families and providers alike.

Recognizing the urgency of Liam’s condition, Phil turned to Pediatric People — a McKesson customer he had recently helped to implement the bioMérieux SPOTFIRE system. When Phil reached out, the practice immediately opened its doors to evaluate Liam using the technology they had recently adopted.

SPOTFIRE’s large respiratory panel was the ideal tool for this situation. As the only CLIA-waived, in-house respiratory panel capable of detecting a broad range of pathogens, SPOTFIRE provides comprehensive molecular results in about 15 minutes1. Unlike traditional send-out panels that may take days, SPOTFIRE’s rapid detection allows providers to take action at the point of care.

The testing process was simple and efficient, requiring only a basic sample and minimal staff training thanks to CLIA-waived classification. Within minutes, the panel returned a clear and actionable result: Liam had Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This condition is undetectable through a visual exam alone and typically requires send-out testing to reference labs. Armed with accurate information, the care team began the appropriate antibiotic treatment immediately. For Phil, the relief was overwhelming. For Pediatric People, the moment reaffirmed the importance of offering advanced molecular diagnostics directly within their practice.

The impact of SPOTFIRE was immediate and powerful. Within 24 hours of receiving the correct treatment, Liam’s symptoms began to improve. He avoided hospitalization, and his recovery continued steadily over the days that followed. This rapid turnaround highlighted the meaningful difference advanced diagnostics can make in pediatric care.

Beyond Liam’s case, Pediatric People experienced a significant shift in how they approach respiratory illnesses. Providers can now diagnose complex conditions at the point of care, enabling faster treatment, antibiotic stewardship, and enhancing patient safety. With respiratory seasons becoming increasingly unpredictable and viral mixtures more common, the ability to quickly differentiate conditions has become an essential aspect of delivering high-quality pediatric care.

Parents also benefit from the peace of mind that comes with rapid answers. Rather than waiting days for send-out results, families receive clarity during their visit. This enhances satisfaction, builds trust and reinforces the clinic’s reputation for advanced, reliable care.

Over time, Pediatric People anticipates measurable benefits across multiple areas, including:

  • Increased diagnostic accuracy through broad-panel molecular testing.
  • Reduced time to diagnosis, with results available in approximately 15 minutes.
  • Stronger patient outcomes due to faster initiation of appropriate treatment.
  • Higher patient satisfaction driven by timely, effective care.
  • Practice growth fueled by positive word of mouth and greater trust in clinical capabilities.
  • Improved antimicrobial stewardship due to accurate diagnosis

For Phil, the experience reinforced the mission behind his role at McKesson: delivering solutions that make a meaningful difference in real lives. In his day-to-day work, Phil works with McKesson Lab Specialists to help practices evaluate technology, compare diagnostic options and understand how the right tools can strengthen their standard of care. Seeing those same solutions directly change the trajectory of his own son’s illness brought a new, personal dimension to his work.
