There are two terms being used when referring to the coronavirus: COVID-19 is the coronavirus disease, while SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) is the virus that causes the disease. These terms are often used interchangeably when talking about the pandemic or lab testing methods.
There’s a lot of information out there around COVID-19 POC lab testing, and you may have questions about what to use.
There are three types of lab testing methods/platforms available, which detect the virus in different ways:
Detect the presence of the virus, and can be used as the primary basis for diagnosing your patient’s condition
Detect the IgM and IgG antibodies that indicate your patient has been previously infected or exposed to the virus. The FDA provided guidance for this type of testing, stating that these antibody serology tests should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2; accuracy and quality of these tests vary greatly
Respiratory season is a busy time of year. This season may be busier than ever, as you screen patients for COVID-19 in addition to the usual flu, RSV and strep. With so much at stake, you can’t afford to wait hours or days for test results. Point-of-care testing provides the information you need for quick, accurate diagnosis.
